Miniaturized micro-optics devices are becoming integral part of hand-held gadgets and micro-surgery. They include pico-cameras, pico-projectors, micro-scanners, micro-mirrors, micro-shutters, and miniaturized confocal microscopy.
Performance is one of the major hurdles in such miniturized devices. It is, for example, easier to have digital cameras with fast autofocus and large optical zooming. However, as their size shrinks, the autofocus and optical zooming capabilities reduce significantly. The other major challenge in this project is micro-fabrication. This project intends to provide novel breakthrough solutions to the existing challenges.
