Nano-actuation and Silicon Photonics for fast scanning probe microscopy and high density data storage

This project aims at implementing a new approach of optical detection system for scanning probe microscopy and high density data storage systems employing nano-actuation and silicon photonics.

At present, only static image of nano-features is possible with scanning microscopy due to its slow speed. One of the speed limitations emanates from the off-chip and expensive optical detection system that is being employed.

The new approach may lead to faster, smaller, and cheaper scanning probe microscopy so that imaging of both structure and dynamics of nano-scale proteins in a relatively large scanning area is possible. The same approach will have applications for high density data storage devices as well.

The project will involve analytical (modelling), simulation (both photonics and electro-mechanics), micro/nano fabrication processes, and characterization.
